Biz Web Sites
Tips
Hosting Services
The server that is going to 'host' your web site can be critical to the success of your business online. You want to select a hosting service that cost effectively meet your current needs, and provide room to grow later on. Note that while you can easily find free places to put up a website, most of these places do not allow you to use these for commercial (money making) purposes.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
If you want to be found when someone is looking via Google or another search engine, you need to have a good page ranking so you are listed as close to the top of the list as possible. Despite what some people might say, you can't buy your way to the top of the list. Your site needs to be properly formatted, organized, and have relevent content in order to have a good page ranking.
Your website page rank with search engines will benefit dramatically by having a few links to your site from other related businesses. A great way to do this is to talk with your partners, suppliers, etc. and ask them to post a link to your website, and in exchange you will reciprocate.
Websites designed for SEO have:
- Semantic markup (h1,h2,h3,h4,..)
- Title tag setup with: business name - business slogan.
- The tags 'strong' and 'em' used on context importent content.
- Anchor tags with 'title' filled with a rich description.
- Header metatags including author, geo tags, copyright, etc.
- Depreciated html tags are not used.
- Properly formatted tables.
- Microformats
- Static IP address
- Domain name registered for three or more years
- Free website hosting is usually bad for search engine rankings
Server side considerations:
- Google canonical problem avoided (w/ w/o www).
- Search engine friendly url's.
- Cache properly managed.
- Sitemaps.xml
Protecting Yourself Online
A number of fairly technical issues need to be handled properly with the website files on the server in order to insure your content cannot be modified or hijacked by anyone. One simple precaution is to put your email address in a contact form that is email enabled rather than just listing it on your site. Web bots scan web pages and pull these email addresses off of them, sending you SPAM like you never had it before.
Absolute basic steps to protect yourself online
- Never click on a link in any email you receive. You cannot trust the source - even if the sender is someone you know (their email address could be hijacked).
- Make your email password different than every other password you have. Make sure your password doesn't refer to you in any way (pet name, car, ...) and it includes upper and lower case letters, one or more numbers, and a special character(#!$%..).
- Every finanical web site (credit card, bank, ..) must have a unique and robust password.
- Don't share too much information about yourself on social networks. Never share your actual birth date and any other information you are typically asked when you call into one of your financial institutions to inquire about your account. Social web sites are major targets for hackers and your information with them is not safe.
Email and SPAM
Nothing worse then sending by email a coupon, invoice, receipt, or newsletter to your clients and they never get it because your email has been SPAM filtered. I will structure your web site to help insure that your clients will receive intended email from you.
